Mississippi House Bill 75 (if passed) would REMOVE FAMILY TRAVEL AND VACATIONS AS ELIGIBLE EXCUSED ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL ACCORDING TO THE COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE LAW in our state.
I would love to hear your opinions about this.
Personally, I think this is absolutely ridiculous!! Why is it ok for students to miss school for school related trips (educational, athletic or otherwise) but not ok for me, as a parent, to take my child on a trip of my choosing?! As long as my child makes up the work within the required timeframe, why is this a problem? Now, I can understand the state not wanting a parent to take a month long vacation during the school year, but I do not understand the state restricting parents from taking their children on a vacation or trip during the school year.
Let me give you some examples to think about.
A child of divorced parents has a father, who is stationed in the military over seas and resides in a different state from the child, gets to come home for 2 weeks in February. Are you telling me that the state would not excuse that child from going to visit their father in the state that the father resides?
I have taken my daughter out of town to our state Capitol for Legislative Day at the Capitol on a school day. That would not be excused?
A parent has to schedule their vacation days by seniority within their company and is only given 2 weeks of vacation. Co-workers with more seniority than the parent are already scheduled off for summer and normal school scheduled vacation days. Are you telling me that the parent cannot take their children on a trip during the week the employee managed to be scheduled off bc they are school days?
A parent has visitation with their child every other weekend and lives 6 hours away from their child’s residence. Once a month or two, the other parent allows their child to miss the school day on Friday so that they can drive to meet the other parent half way, allowing that parent more time with the child and preventing the child from having to travel into the night. This would not be excused?
Keep in mind, parents, there is more work for the school and district when your child has unexcused absences, AND 5 unexcused absences can get you in BIG TROUBLE with the state.
