Funding for education in our state has been uncertain this year amidst the current, heavily debated MAEP formula and the findings of the EdBuild report which aims to change the way education is funded in this state. Bills that were authored to change the MAEP formula did not survive in this session. There are those in the legislature that believe a special session will be needed to determine funding for education moving forward. Whether or not the House and Senate can come together to make that happen is the big question.

Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations committee voted to fund the current funding formula, MAEP, at $2.2 billion dollars. This amount provides level funding and an increase over last year’s allocation. While the education funding formula debate continues, yesterday’s action will give MDE and school districts statewide some idea of what they will have financially for next year. What happens past this will be anyone’s guess, so stay tuned.
