I am sharing the following statement from State Senator Michael Watson in reference to the Clarion Ledger’s article on the PERS system in Mississippi. Be sure to click on the link at the bottom here to read the article.
From Senator Watson:
“We are not funded where we should be.”
“However, we are not in a crisis. The board has a policy in place to make sure we don’t get to a crisis.”
“It’s going to take time to get out of this.”
I’ve heard these same lines the entire time I’ve been in the legislature. Unfortunately, so have state retirees and current employees, and that’s why no one can discuss PERS without talk of having their political (and sometimes physical) house burned down. They’re continually told, “everything is fine, nothing to see here.”
I hope every state employee and retiree will take the time to do some deep research and study our state retirement system.
I also hope legislative leadership will finally put a long term plan in place to have an annual trooper school. Their retirement system isn’t the only thing suffering from smaller numbers. More importantly, so is your safety.
