It is apparent that Mississippi’s HB 1523, passed this year by the legislature, is creating quite the controversy for our state. The Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act was signed by Governor Phil Bryant and has caused an enormous amount of backlash. It has been labeled as the ‘Anti-LGBT’ bill, which resulted in the Ellen Degeneres show calling the governor’s office. Governor Bryant and his staff have been inundated with phone calls from across the country. The legislators that supported this bill are standing firmly behind it. You can tell by the pictures below that some people are not happy about this bill and are taking measures to ban travel to our state. Review the pictures below, then read through the bill here: http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2016/pdf/HB/1500-1599/HB1523SG.pdf. After reading the bill, what do you think? Are people over dramatizing this new law or are the concerns real?
