DeSoto County School District board president Steve Dodd acknowledged Monday night the district will look into claims that principals are being arbitrary in discipline issues with students of different races.
James Mathis heads the DeSoto County Parents and Students for Justice group that has filed a civil rights complaint against the district with the U.S. Department of Education.
In the public comment portion of Monday’s meeting, Mathis appeared before the board to ask it investigate how principals are enforcing discipline, especially in regards to minorities.
“I’m asking that the board look into that, to see why so many of these principals are going away from what is written in the code of discipline and do what they want to do,” Mathis said.
